To do my second book cover I made a silhouette of Caroline. To do this I had to expose for the white background by making my ISO 100 to get rid of al my ambient light, making my shutter speed as fast as possible (1/250) and changing my aperture to balance it out, in this case it was 9.0. My flash, which was set on 1/4 +1/3, was placed behind Caroline so I was lighting the white background and not Caroline.
